You are currently viewing Business Blogging: Crafting Your Voice
  • Post category:Blogging

The voice of your blog is the tone your writing conveys. When customers read your blog, what is the impression they are left with? Do they come away with the idea that the author is friendly or cold, straight-forward or humorous, interesting or as boring as sawdust? Do they trust the author’s expertise, or do they think the writing was convoluted and unhelpful? How you craft your voice impacts the way readers will interpret your blogs and interact with you as a business.

At Fresh Figs Marketing, authenticity is at the root of all of our marketing efforts. We believe that every communication must reflect the experience a customer will receive when doing business with a brand. A blog is the prime place to give your customers an example of what it’s like to work with you. Whether your company is friendly and fun, or serious and calm, bring the elements of that culture to your computer keyboard.

Three Essentials to Crafting Your Business Blogging Voice

  1. Set Goals

It’s hard to write in a voice you have not defined. Take the time to review your company culture and how you can apply it to the voice of your writing.  Write down a list of words that you want your blog to be (inviting, expert, to the point, etc.) to act as your compass when you sit down to write. Also consider your audience and how they would like to be “spoken” to.

  1. Revise Your Terminology

Businesses that specialize in complicated products or systems can easily lose their layman customers in foreign lingo. A careful review of your blogs will help you catch words that your audience is not familiar with. If you have to use a term people won’t know, be ready to explain it clearly in your post.

  1. Vary Your Vocabulary

I have found variety is the best way to make your blogs engaging—using the same words over and over again can be bland and tiring. However, your word choice will depend on the tone you are going for; if you want to be taken seriously by your readers, you may want to reduce any over-the-top language or ambitious verbiage. If you want to be a little silly, as part of your brand, then your language can be more colorful.

Your business blog is part of your services, and thus part of your brand, reputation and customer experience. Don’t be afraid to bring your company’s culture into your writing voice since it is a large part of why people will do business with you.
