Consistency in your blogging builds trust, reach and readership. Sadly, that routine doesn’t just happen. You have to plan for it, especially when you are already busy and other tasks or distractions will pull you away from your schedule. Problems arise, circumstances rearrange your schedule…all in all, if you don’t have a plan, you have nothing to follow when difficulties swarm.
For a blog, posting consistently (i.e. posting new content on your website blog and pushing it out through social media) plays a big part in building your readership. A haphazard effort does not get you anywhere. If you write a blog whenever you feel like it, or whenever you have time (by the way, you’ll never have time), your blog will not produce the results you are aiming for. Rather, it will give the impression you are disinterested. To blog consistently means making room in your life to create.
Blogging Content Strategy
Your content strategy is the plan for reaching your blogging goals, including who you are writing for and what you want to happen as a result. Establishing your goals and audience can help you brainstorm topics to write about throughout the year. Your goals likely include bringing in more customers and garnering a readership that will spread the word about your company. To reach those goals, you will want to write interesting blogs that provide worth to your readers; that is, your posts should answer questions readers are asking. Nowadays Google is the go-to for solving issues. Questions like “how to identify bad engine sounds” or “why aren’t my tomato plants growing” are typed in directly. If you can provide those internet searchers with answers that work, then they are more likely to trust and come to you with their needs. Your blog acts as an extension of your services and knowledge. Think of yourself and your employees as experts, and your blog as a means by which you answer customers’ questions and demonstrate what you know. With a content strategy in place, you can fall back on it to remind yourself why you are blogging and for whom, helping you maintain a steady output of content.
Blogging Schedules
Blogs don’t have to be planned out years in advance, but having a posting schedule for a month or more out will help you meet the small goal of writing, and thus carrying you to the major goals of building a readership, extending your reach, and garnering more customers. Start with the basics: how often do you want to blog? Once or twice weekly? Once or twice monthly? Be realistic about how much time you have to spend brainstorming, writing, and posting. Chart the days you are going to write in a calendar, then block out the time you need to create content. It is important to designate time specifically for writing; otherwise you will likely find yourself putting it off.
