Editing is a crucial step in creating any type of content, not just for grammar and spelling, but honing your prose for clarity and vocabulary. Editing is also not just something you do when you have time. Editing always helps. If you are a creator, you are a reviser too. Identifying and fixing problems should be a part of every process, and in writing it just happens to be called “editing”.
Like everyone has their own writing voice and process, everyone will have their own method of editing. However, there are tried-and-true tricks for getting the most out of your revisions. Here are two I find helpful:
Edit Later
Once you have created content, put it away until the next day before you self-edit. Giving yourself space and time away from your content helps you see it objectively; it’s easy to gloss over mistakes when you have been reading and tweaking them for the past hour. In order to have enough time to edit, you will need to create content before you want to publish to avoid cramming this crucial step in right before it goes on your blog. The best ideas and blog posts are often not written on the first try. Taking a step back from your work and looking at it again usually results in better content.
Peer Editing
Having someone else edit your blog sidesteps having to put time between yourself and your content—it gives you a truly outside perspective on your work. Share your goals for the post with your editor, and discuss your target audience. They will need to know how to evaluate your writing from that perspective.
Being grammatically correct is one aspect of editing, but your true goal is sending the correct message to your target audience. Editing allows you to fine-tune your content and boost its effectiveness.
